Integrating Disciplines: Multi-Skilling for People With Healthcare Courses and Beyond

By

Expert Author Valeria Stephens
Over the last two decades, the way we work has evolved. Computers and technological advances have made their way into virtually every industry, while small and medium-sized business have taken on a larger role in the job market. In this new landscape, the healthcare industry is thriving, but is healthcare courses enough to prepare you for your career goals? Consider coupling your education with accounting courses or IT training.
Earn More Money
Whether you are already completed your healthcare training in you discipline of choice or you're looking to embark on an exciting new career, you need to understand how to make yourself valuable to an employer. Depending on your career goals, that may mean you have to be a versatile employee who can go above and beyond the scope of your job title.
For example, among nurses, a nurse with accounting training has more additional skills to draw upon than a nurse without extra knowledge. Alternatively, if you were a dental hygienist, programming like you learn at IT schools might arm you for changes in medical technology.
Once you understand what you want from your career, you can tailor your education to that path, which will help you make more money in the long run. However, even if you choose to focus on healthcare courses, you should also integrate some accounting and IT courses to ensure that you are up-to-date on the basic information you will need.
A Wide Range of Responsibilities
The example above holds true for any industry, but it is especially true for healthcare courses, accounting courses and IT courses.
Everyday the healthcare industry is moving farther away from pen and paper ways of the past. Almost everything is stored on computers and entered into electronic medical records so that it can be accessed by providers all over the country in real time. The technology used to treat patients is also becoming highly-technical, which makes it tough to use if you don't have a solid IT foundation. Additionally, medical professionals have to understand the accounting side of the business in order to avoid making costly mistakes on charts and records that will cause issues for the coding and billing department.
On the flip side, graduates of accounting and IT schools should consider getting some basic healthcare education because it will make them more valuable to employers in the industry.
Have More Job Opportunities
If you have well-rounded training, you can work for small, medium-sized, and large companies, because you can perform well no matter what is required of you. That's why educational companies that integrate healthcare courses with IT training and accounting courses help to set you up for long-term success more effectively than educators who only specialize in one narrow field.
Visit Academy of Learning College for more information on healthcare courses and multi-skilling.

Faith and Fitness - The Link Between God's Flesh and Ours

By

There are numerous Scriptures, such as 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and Romans 12:2 which plainly demonstrate the fact that God cares about our physical bodies. However, there are other equally important, if not so obvious Scriptures that establish the high value God places on these magnificent bodies he has given us. This article investigates the truth that our bodies matter because God Himself took on flesh.
The Gospel of John opens up:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:1, 14 ESV)
The Scriptures clearly teach that Jesus was both fully God and fully human. He is God Incarnate, God in the flesh! Verse 14 tells us, "The Word became flesh." John chooses his words very carefully here. Notice, John does not say, "the Word became man," or "the Word appeared in bodily form." He puts it crudely to deal with the Docetic heresy of that time. The Docetists believed that all matter was evil; thus, God could not come into contact with physical flesh. According to them, Jesus Christ only appeared to be human, but did not have an actual physical body. But John emphatically declares, "The Word became flesh."
The great theologian and author, J.I. Packer, calls this the supreme mystery of the gospel. In his book, Knowing God, he wrote:
The really staggering Christian claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was God made man-that the second person of the Godhead became the "second man" (1 Corinthians 15:47) (J. I. Packer, Knowing God [Downers Grove, IL: 1993, InterVarsity Press], 53)
Packer goes on to say, "He who made man was now learning what if felt like to be man" (p. 57). Jesus was completely human and his earthly body was identical to ours in every way. The Gospels tell us:
  1. Jesus grew intellectually and physically (Luke 5:42)
  2. Jesus needed food for nourishment (Matthew 4:2)
  3. Jesus became tired (John 4:6)
  4. Jesus needed rest (Matthew 8:24),
  5. Jesus was subject to death (John 19:13)
  6. Jesus' physical body was resurrected (Luke 24.39-43; John 20.26-38).
So what does this mean for us? What does this have to do with our discussions about the importance of taking care of our bodies for the glory of God? First, the simple fact the God himself became flesh, dignifies our flesh. Jesus had a physical body. Scriptures do not give us much direct information about Christ's appearance, other than the prophesy of Isaiah which said, "There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him" (Isaiah 53:2 NLT). We can, however, deduce that Jesus was physically fit. This simply reiterates our assertion that physical fitness is all about vanity.
Jesus Was Physically Fit
How can we ascertain that Jesus was physically fit? There are several reasons. Until about the age of 30, Jesus was a carpenter. At that time, carpenters were also stonemasons. Since there were no power tools, trucks, fork-lifts, etc., this occupation involved strenuous labor. After he began his ministry, Jesus spent much of his time walking. We also know that Jesus would have followed a strict Jewish diet, consisting mostly of fish, whole grain bread and fresh vegetables and fruit.
Furthermore, it is reasonable to believe that Jesus was VERY physically fit because of what he endured during his beating and crucifixion. Considering our recent remembrance of death and Resurrection of Christ, this seems a fitting place to revisit what Christ endured on our behalf.
The beating Christ received at the hands of the Romans was beyond brutal. Dr. Alexander Metherell, a consultant to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health of Bethesda, Maryland, and board-certified in diagnosis by the American Board of Radiology, stated that many people would die from the scourging alone.
"At the least, the victim would experience tremendous pain and go into hypovolemic shock [which] means the person is suffering the effects of losing a large amount of blood... Because of the terrible effects of this beating, there's no question that Jesus was already in serious to critical condition even before the nails were driven through his hands and feet." (Dr. Alexander Metherell, interviewed by Lee Strobel, in The Case for Christ, (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan Publishing House, 1998), 196).
Having endured one of the most extreme forms of human torment, Christ was forced to carry the beam of his cross up the hill to Golgotha where he faced the most horrific mode of execution ever devised by man. The pain of the cross was so severe it has its own adjective, excruciating, which literally means "from the cross."
This has often caused me to reflect on what God has done on my behalf, on your behalf. Perhaps the most famous of Bible verses, John 3:16 tells us,""For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (ESV). Romans tells us, "but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8 ESV).
Again, you may be asking yourself what does this have to do with what I do with my body. Simple. God paid for your body with the blood of Christ. Christ is our example.
"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)
Christ considered the will of his Father above his own to the point that he submitted his body to be beaten and crucified, and we have a hard time putting down our donuts or inconvenient to exercise so that we can have a healthy enough body to be the hands and feet of Christ.
Harsh? Perhaps. True? Painfully so. Thankfully, the story does not end there. There is another aspect of the humanity of Christ for us to consider--it gives us hope.
Hope For Us
The epistle to the Hebrews draws great comfort from Jesus' humanity.
"Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect... because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted... For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 2:17-18; 4:15-16 ESV)
God does not leave us to deal with our struggles on our own. On the contrary, He has already faced the same temptations we face and overcame them. He has promised us that He will help us to overcome.
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
Having a hard time putting down that donut, diet coke, BBQ, or whatever your weakness is? Ask God to give you the strength to say no to "deceptive foods" and yes to healthy foods. Finding it difficult to make time to exercise? Ask God to help you manage your time to make the time for the things that are in line with His priorities for your life. Find someone to help hold you accountable for the way you treat your body under God's authority. Form a Fit Club at your church for encouragement and support as you share in each others victories and struggles. We have to be disciplined in order to glorify God in our lives and live abundantly as we should. Turn off the TV and stop playing games online. Pray, read your Bible, spend time with your family, exercise, eat right, serve others, get financially free. Considering what He has done for us, it is the least we can do for Him.

90 Day Test to Find Out If Cold Sores Could Be Halted Naturally!

By

I woke up this morning with that horrid tingly feeling you receive each time a cold sore is imminent. While you might think it's only a small problem, for a few of us cold sore outbreaks can be quite a nuisance and leave us feeling moody. While I have tried using every medicine on the market throughout the years I am still no closer to halting the outbreaks! One of the most annoying thing about remedies they show on television is they never actually work, well they never have for me in any case! The remedies and lotions on television haven't helped me and I am yet to find somebody that approves of them! I ought to be able to get a full refund for every time these creams fail to work!
It is the worst feeling in the world when you know an episode is forthcoming and you could do nothing at all to prevent it spreading across your lip area! For 2 weeks I'll be saddled with a cold sore and my social life will cease to exist! My social interaction ceases to exist and I attempt to remain in my home as much as I can through the two weeks that it is noticeable! If you search the web then every different source of information and facts states different things when attempting to cope with cold sores. Keep it moist, ensure that it stays dried up, put ointment on it, don't put lotion on it, you simply can't seem to find anybody who agrees on the recommendations.
I have tried lots of home cures through the years and these don't appear to work too well either, a number of them are merely absurd! Last time I'd an outbreak I had been told to test ice on it so I I did, I have to be truthful I saw no benefit from it, the cold sore was still massive! Over the past year I've also tried many other ointments and random lotions. A few of the natural home remedies are beyond dumb and also have zero medical data behind them and so I only experimented with those which would seem more likely to actually work! So far none have really seemed to work!
My next experiment is to adjust my life style completely, eat well, absolutely no alcohol, exercise a lot more and find out if this changes something. I was hoping that maybe preventative measures will work better compared to post-tingle measures which in all honesty, has not worked at all in the past! My goal is to spend the following 3 months on a rigid exercise and diet program in the hope of lowering the cold sore breakout's Of course I'd much prefer researchers found a cure for the virus but I'm certain they have a number of other more important viruses and diseases they might be taking a look at than the well-known cold sore virus.
Tomorrow morning I'll be spending ninety days eating just like a health-freak and training like an Olympic marathon athlete in the hope that I see a significant difference. I'll keep you up to date with my developments and whether it was beneficial to me at all!
If you're hoping to stop the cold sore virus then explore the solutions offered.

Salmon Sandwich With Pickled Red Onions, Arugula, and Cherry Pepper Mayo

By

I love salmon - to me it's the king of all the fish from the sea - and I've gotten in the habit of cooking up an extra fillet when we're making dinner just so I can make this sandwich the next day. There endless possibilities for an extra salmon fillet, including this awesome sandwich, but you can also make a salmon salad with spinach and a red wine vinaigrette, or just eat it with a little mustard on some crackers.
I've made this salmon sandwich a couple of ways now. One of which was the classic tuna salad style wherein you mush the fish up with mayo, pickles, and a little dijon mustard and smoosh it on some bread - that was pretty darn good but it lacked the pretty appearance of this version. The much prettier version can be made with an adulterated, unsmooshed fillet garnished with Pickled Onions (a revelation in their own right), Dijon Mustard, fresh baby Arugula, and a generous smear of Mayo augmented with some diced Cherry Peppers.
Cherry Peppers are sold in jars near the pickles, olives, and jalapenos. They have every bit of the flavor of jarred jalapenos but with none of the heat (and though we love jalapenos, sometimes they can be a little overpowering). Cherry peppers are amazing in this mayo. They lend tang, sweetness, and depth and it's super easy to knock out a big batch with extra for later (which I heartily recommend, trust me you'll want more).
Butter and toast some sliced Ciabatta and you've got yourself the makings for the best sandwich ever. If you can find Ciabatta Rolls you can make some mean Salmon Sliders.
Ingredients:
  • 4 to 6 oz Seared Salmon Fillet
  • 2 Mini Ciabatta Rolls or a Ciabatta hunk split sideways-wise
  • A handful of Arugula
  • Cherry Pepper Mayo
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Pickled Red Onions
Cherry Pepper Mayo:
Combine a 1/4 cup of Mayo with 3 diced Cherry Peppers
Instructions:
  1. Butter the bread and toast it, butter side down, on a skillet over medium heat until toasted. A couple minutes.
  2. Sprinkle the Salmon with Salt & Pepper and sear it in a drizzle of Olive Oil over medium heat until it's 2/3 cooked through, then flip it and sear for another couple minutes
  3. In the meantime smear one half of the bread with Dijon and the other with some Cherry Pepper Mayo
  4. Layer on the Arugula, Salmon, and Pickled Onions.
  5. Enjoy!

You Have the Right To Defend Yourself

By

Self-defense involves defending yourself, a loved one, or your property from harm. The right of self-defense justifies the use of force in times of duress and is acceptable in many jurisdictions, but what is permissible varies greatly from place to place. Despite what the intricacies of the law states, most people would agree they are allowed to defend themselves by whatever means necessary in order to protect themselves and the people they love.
For this reason, many people choose to own firearms to defend themselves against home invasion or take self-defense courses, like Krav Maga, to fend off attackers. Krav Maga courses are geared towards hand-to-hand fighting in self-defense, which means the odds are great the defender will be barehanded.
In cases where the police are unable to promptly respond in your defense, the use of self-defense is granted but can be limited depending on the jurisdiction. What authorities do not allow is the use of excessive force beyond what is absolutely necessary to dispel the situation. This is commonly referred to as excessive self-defense. When it comes to defending oneself, it has to be "reasonable." Thankfully, Krav Maga instructors not only teach you how to react accordingly in order to fend off an attack, they teach students how to become disciplined enough to stop an attack once your opponent is unable to continue their harassment. Think about it in this way: be good enough so you do not have to hurt needlessly or irreversibly.
In the Western world, the use of self-defense is allowed, but there are stricter caveats to it than in other parts of the world. An example of a judgment call regarding what justifies the use of force in defense can be found in Germany. Criminal law in that country distinguishes asthenic affect and sthenic effect: the former is fear for one's life or the life of another, and the latter is anger. The use of force due to asthenic affect is permissible because the subject is afraid of what the attacker may do. Escalation of violence by the attacker is definitely something to be afraid of because once a person has decided to accost you, the inherent trust between both sides is broken, and there is no telling what they are capable of.
While self-defense may be controversial to some, you are well within your right to defend yourself from someone who wants to do you harm. You just have to be disciplined and practice self control.

Mother May I?

By
Expert Author Monika KleinWhy yes you may take good care of yourself and kick back this Mother's Day - certainly! Women tend to take care of everyone else first before themselves. I don't think this attribute is actually genetically inherited, but it's definitely socially inherited. Although, when we study the animal kingdom that's generally what females do: they care, tend and nurture the family unit.
But needless to say we have evolved - right? I spend a lot of time trying to broaden my clients perspective and to "include" rather than "put as last" themselves on their list of priorities.
Here are the best tips to ensure you celebrate your Mother's Day well even if you technically aren't a mother:
Here are YOUR 5 Tips:
Tip #1 Be Zen About It: A good friend sent me a great photo a couple of weeks ago entitled "That was Zen this is Meow" - I loved it. As you know by now I have 2 wonderful cats that meow with a Zen attitude all the time. Hope about you? Are you putting a Zen spin into your day - purring calmly throughout the day? Being more Zen or being more like a cat will not only balance you out a bit during hectic times but it'll also put a smile on your face most of the time. As my Mom always says, always focus on the good as the not so good has a way of showing up on it's own. Try and Be Zen about it all.
Tip # 2 It's Actually OK to say NO: I know you were probably taught to say yes, please and may I from a young age. A great way to actually age quicker than is necessary is to say yes to everything. There's nothing wrong with being polite, of course but better yet try being polite to and honest with yourself first. Learn to set boundaries and appreciate and recognize your limits.
I often see my clients easily getting off track and making poor choices because they are overwhelmed with everyone else's stuff. They begin apologizing to me for not sticking with their nutrition and lifestyle program because of something that took precedence. No need to apologize and nothing should be more important than your health - it's your lifeline. Trust me, it'll never work if you don't take yourself and your goals seriously and act on them. Without sufficient downtime to think, plan and sort things out it's very difficult to make changes inside.
Tip #3 Give Yourself a Treat: A treat does not need to be a gooey, rich, edible morsel. That's just an easy way to instant weight gain, and over time permanent weight gain. Hold off on indulging in food. Why not try something less caloric instead. How about taking a nap instead. I just spoke with a dear friend and she told me she just woke up from a wonderful nap and felt revived and re-freshed. She could function once again. You may not want to make a habit of this, but every once in awhile it can be a Special Treat give to yourself.
Tip # 4 Spend Time with MOM, if you can: There's nothing like giving yourself the special gift of spending time with MOM. Of course, it's a treasure for her, too. Have lunch together, look at old photos, and laugh about the funny times. If you can't spend Mother's Day together, like I'm not able to this year, make sure you call and share some loving and healing thoughts with each other. Celebrate together in spirit any way you can.
Tip # 5 Commit to Eating Fresh, Whole & Clean: It's not that difficult to make your home and office a no-junk zone. Fresh fruits and vegetables ought to be your mainstay. Keep them visible on your tables, counters and in your crisper. I have 2 bowls of fruit - one on my dining room table, the other in a fruit basket just by the front door.
I love having it near the door as it helps me to remember to take a piece with me as I head out - usually an apple, pear or orange. The more involved fruit, requiring peeling like grapefruit, I leave as my in-house choice. Making healthy, fresh food accessible is an easy thing you can incorporate into your day.

Always Be Yourself Because Then You Are Balanced

By
Expert Author Lieven VerbruggeSome days ago I went to an open martial arts championship. Fighters from different schools and disciplines gathered to test their skills. A fight lasts about three minutes and many fighters prepared themselves for a year for this moment. The rules are simple. You win, you go to the next round of the tournament. You lose, you are out and eventually you could participate again next year.
I have a passion for martial arts. One reason for this is precisely because of these three minutes. For an outsider this is a short moment. For a fighter however it is a significantly long and intensive period of time.
When the fight starts, your adrenaline kicks in and your body is ready to act. Your mind is focused. Feelings of excitement, determination, fear and uncertainty mingle. Every punch or kick that your body receives can only mean one of two things. Or you didn't see it coming or your defense wasn't sufficient. Every time you succeed in scoring a point, you judged the situation right and you reacted correctly. All this happens so fast and your mind processes the information in microseconds. A fight demands so much energy that your body quickly gets tired. The adrenaline and the hard training made you resistant to most of the pain. You breath intensively and each time the judge stops the fight for a few seconds you try to calm down your body and recover as much as you can. Then you restart the fight and give the best of what you got, until the three minutes are over.
For me these three minutes represent in some way life in a highly accelerated manner. In some fights you see an overconfident participant who loses the fight because he underestimated his opponent. In other fights you see a participant who is technically very strong, but loses the fight because he lacks confidence. You can sometimes observe how the confidence level rises and falls depending on how the fight evolves. It is a struggle for many fighters not to be too happy when they think they are winning and not to be too uncertain when they think they are losing. An experienced fighter knows that every second of the fight brings a new opportunity and the situation can change rapidly.
Just like in real life, to be overconfident or to be too insecure doesn't really bring you forward. In Martial Arts as in life the real skill is to stay in balance and to stay yourself, regardless of the situation. In Chinese philosophy this is called Zhong Young, the way of the middle. The author Kong Ji (the grandson of Confucius, +- 450 B.C.) describes it in this way: "The superior man can find himself in no situation in which he is not himself. In a high situation, he does not treat with contempt his inferiors. In a low situation, he does not search the favour of his superiors." Fighting in competitions and experience victory and defeat, is a perfect way to discover this valuable principle.
